The Chinese Calendar (also called the Lunar calendar) starts from the 1st day of Chinese New Year.

When it comes to the number 7 month, which is commonly known as the Chinese Ghost month, the Chinese believes that the gate of ‘Hell’ will open its door. Yesterday was the 1st day of the 7 month.

This is when all the ‘souls of the dead (ghosts)’ that are being locked up will be allowed to leave ‘Hell’ and come out to wander and look for food on earth. They are commonly known as “hungry ghosts”.

Another belief among the Chinese is that the dead return to visit their living relatives during the 7th month and thus they prepare a sumptuous meal for the ‘hungry ghosts’. The Chinese feel that they have to satisfy the ghosts in order to get good fortune and luck in their lives.

In other words, the Chinese can choose any day during this month to host the celebration to ‘entertain and feed the hungry ghosts’. This celebration among the Chinese community everywhere, would be the staging of operas and other musical performances, said to provide entertainment for these dead souls

On the 15th day of the month, however, it is believed that the Chinese will ‘invite’ their dead relatives for a meal and burn joss sticks, hell money in surprisingly large denominations, daily essentials of paper clothes, shoes, TV, radio, and even cars and other luxuries. Such practice is done to ensure that their present generation and generations to come would be blessed, and free from any harm.
(As you know, Chinese has many dialect groups eg Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, etc.. What I understand is that Cantonese will do it on the 14th day whilst other dialect groups do it on the 15th day).

More extreme, the older generation would believe that during the 7th month, lots of things cannot be done as it is seen as not auspicious. Important events like marriage, shifting house, starting new business, going for holidays, etc.. will be delayed until after the 7th month.

Some people will not go swimming as they worry the ‘naughty ghosts’ may drown them in the water. Some will not go out too late at night as they believe that at night is when the ‘ghosts’ will be out in full force.

On the last day of the 7th month, the gate to "Hell" will close and these roaming 'souls of the dead' must return to "Hell"
